She describes affairs as being the “antidote to death” because they make people feel so alive. And I would suspect that there’s nothing more tempting than feeling like an infatuated teenager, blissfully ignorant to the trials and tribulations of adult life and its responsibilities, while standing face to face with aging, disease, or despair.
