It’s the 35th anniversary of my favorite movie. I grew up in the 80s, graduating from high school the same year as Ferris. I loved every bit of this movie and have seen it countless times.

It didn’t set any box office records back then, June 11, 1986 — only finishing second place on its opening weekend. But it burrowed quickly into our pop culture lexicon.

LIFE MOVES PRETTY FAST

AKA, shit changes. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” from my favorite philosopher, Ferris Bueller.

Breaking down that fourth wall, talking to us, the viewer! It was thrilling. No movie had done that before. I stayed for the final credits when he shooed us out while he was in his hallway and laughed and laughed.

“You’re still here? It’s over. Go home! Go.”

Ferris was my type of teenager. Everything I wasn’t at that age — confident, charismatic, fun, and exuberant. I wanted to be Mia Sara as Sloane so badly. She had Ferris.

BREAKING THE RULES

“The question isn’t ‘what are we going to do,’ the question is what aren’t we going to do.”
